What is a MPP?

A Mailer's Postmark Permit (MPP) is issued by the United States Postal Service free of charge. It authorizes the holder to cancel the postage on his/her own mail prior to submitting it to the Post Office. A special rubber stamp postmark must be obtained by the permit holder.

MPP's were first authorized for use by private individuals by a directive dated May 29, 1930 from the U.S. Post Office. At that time, its use was restricted to postal cards and postal stationery. A more relaxed ruling by the USPS, dated September 21, 1978, allowed mailers to cancel the postage on any type of mail, including First Class, Priority Mail and parcels.

Postmark and stamp collectors enjoy this process; it enables them to carefully cancel postage on their own mail en route to other collectors. Many decorate the envelope with fancy catchets, special seals, pictures, local post stamps and a variety of cancels. The results, an attractive collectible, a welcome addition that will spice up any collection.

If you have never played post office before, now is the time to: Join in the fun . . . cancel your own!
